Top O'Oil Trail Traditional Cache

This cache is located along the historic Olinda Trail in the Carbon Canyon area of North Orange County.
If you happen to be caching on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday from 9am to 4pm, you can park at the “Olinda Historic Museum and Park” (N33°55.586, W117°50.219), just off Santa Fe Rd in Brea. Santa Fe Rd goes north into the “new” housing area from the main entrance to Carbon Canyon Regional Park. Those are the official hours of the Museum. I have seen the parking lot open at other times, but you risk getting locked in.
There is no parking on Santa Fe Rd, but at other times, you can park on Merrifield Street near N33°55.477, W117°50.159 (except for street cleaning Mondays 8am - noon). This actually make a nice 1.6 mile or so loop of the trail if you plan to hike the full trail, and is the same miles anyway, since the loop trail hits Santa Fe Rd just down from Merrifield Street (you will see an “Olinda Trail” sign there). I spoke with a park ranger, who assured me that the trail is always open (sunrise to sunset), even if the parking lot is not. There is a walk-in gate to the left of the drive-in gate. He suggested the parking spot on Merrifield (which I often use). The only exceptions would be “if posted as closed”, or during muddy trail conditions (48 hours after a significant rain).
Don’t forget to check out the neat museum (if open), and the old oil pump and other related equipment behind it.
The cache is located just off the official Olinda Trail, which starts near the big (and informative) sign board, and proceeds to the right of the museum building. It is well marked, and there are a number of very interesting historical sign boards along the trail.
The cache is a small metal container, about 2" X 3" X 1", well hidden using handy material. Please be sure it is not easily visible when replacing it. It is only a few steps off the trail, with no bush-whacking (or very little) required (depending on the time of year), nor walking on steep hillsides.
