2nd Best place in Halifax to play basketball - Studley
Studley gym is my 2nd most favourite place to go play basketball in the City of Halifax. It was the main Dalhousie University gym from 1931 until Dalplex was built in 1982 and is still very active for varsity practices and intramural sports. Some community groups rent the gym for basketball games.
Metro Masters Men's basketball has rented the gym on Sunday nights for the last 20 years. Originally, you had to be in your 35th year or older to join, but in 2008, that age limit was increased to 45. The league is now called Metro Grandmasters with 14 teams. Games start at 3pm and end at 10pm on Sundays between mid September and end of March. Special rules - 1 referee, no foul shots (play as if you scored all free throws) and subs on the fly;-)
When Dalplex has activities, their noon hoops moves to this Studley gym. Indeed the "Annual" celebrating 45 years of Noon Hoops took place Dec 12, 2013 at Studley. 2 hours of 4 on 4 games started at 11:30AM are followed by a trip to Midtown Tavern where a meal is enjoyed in memory of Sandy Young the founder and all the players who have enjoyed the game over the years. 80 yr old Cofounder Herb Gamberg presided with the yearly ranking of frequent players.
It is not feasible to just walk in at odd hours to play pickup here. The gym is rented out by Dalhousie by the hour or used for student classes and activities.
