Geocache Description:

Welcome to Cresco! The listed coordinates do not take you to the physical cache, but will take you to the first stage of this multi-cache. The first two stages of the cache will give you information needed to find the coordinates to the final stage of the cache. Note: There is also an Adventure Lab, a wherigo, and a traditional cache near the first stage of this multi-cache!

At the given coordinates is a statue of Dr. Norman Borlaug. Dr. Borlaug grew up on a farm near Cresco. He was known throughout the world as the Father of the Green Revolution. Dr. Borlaug dedicated his life to finding ways to provide a food source for millions of people in third world countries. He developed high-yielding, disease resistant, strains of wheat that saved more than a billion lives across the world. For his work, Dr. Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Congressional Gold Medal, one of only five people in the world to receive all three of these awards. He also received the National Medal of Science and numerous other awards. He attributed his work ethic and values to growing up in this area. Dr. Borlaug taught and did research at Texas A&M University from 1984 until his death on September 21, 2009 at the age of 95 years old.

The second stage takes you to the parking lot of Ellen Church Field. Ellen church grew up in Cresco and became the world’s first flight attendant. Following graduation from Crestwood High School, Ellen went to school to become a nurse. While going to nursing school, Ellen took flying lessons. She wanted to become a pilot. Although Boeing would not hire her as a pilot, Ellen was told that the company might be hiring stewards, like the ones they had heard about on some airlines in other countries. Ellen convinced the airline that it would be good to have a nurse on all flights to care for passengers that got airsick, or to calm passengers who were frightened on the flight. Boeing decided to give Ellen a three month trial as a stewardess or "sky girl". On May 15, 1960, she was a stewardess on her first flight from Oakland to Chicago. Ellen helped convince passengers that flying was safe. Boeing was so impressed that they told her to hire seven more nurses to work as stewardesses. Her duties included helping pilots push the planes in and out of the hangar, fueling the plane, tightening bolts, hauling luggage, as well as serving meals and beverages to the passengers. She also trained other stewardesses. Ellen helped design uniforms with capes, worn with white gloves and high heels. The rest is history!
There is no need to go beyond the parking lot to get the information needed.
