Paint By Numbers
This type of puzzle has been around for a while, and if you read
GAMES magazine, you're probably very familiar with it. The numbers
tell you which squares should be filled in to form a picture.
The numbers outside each row and column tell you how many groups
of black squares there are in that line, and, in order, how many
consecutive black squares are in each group. For example, a line
with the numbers "3 2 5" would have three consecutive shaded
squares, some blank spaces, then two shaded squares, some blank
spaces, and five shaded squares. The trick to the puzzle is to
figure out how many empty squares separate the groups of black
squares. Also, lines may start and end with empty squares.
Study this example for starters. When you understand the game,
print off the grid and solve for your hint to the cache.
