Geocache Description:

This is one of a series of caches created for the purpose of introducing geocachers to the rich history, the extensive path network and the general scenic beauty of the Irvine Valley and surrounding countryside.

On this battlefield in 1679 the Covenanters defeated Grahame of Claverhouse and his dragoons. This period of Scottish history was known as the 'Killing Times' and it was during which many lowland Scots were executed or sent to the colonies as slaves. Their crime was their refusal to accept the king as the head of the church. Religious freedom only resulted after the Stewart dynasty had ended. A substantial monument has stood here for many years commemorating this victory over the king's army. Close by on a hill sits the impressive Stobieside House.
