Hastings West Hill Lift is open daily 10 - 5.30 - BUT IN WINTER MAY
BE CLOSED FOR PERIODS FOR MAINTENANCE.
You need clues from inside the carriage and the entry hall at
both ends of the ride to lead you to the final cache, which is on
the West Hill. You needn't ride the lift: the helpful staff will
probably let you look inside the carriage without going on the
train. I,ve spoken to several of them in the course of setting the
cache and asked if they'd mind tpeople asking for access to
complete a treasure hunt. All were very supportive.
UNLIKE THE ACTORS IN THE FILM, YOU WILL NOT NEED TO CLAMBER OVER
THE CLIFF-FACE, OR VENTURE ANYWHERE DANGEROUS, TO FIND THIS
CACHE
(http://www.hows.org.uk/personal/rail/hast.htm: this good little
website will tell you more about this great little train.)
NORTH BY NORTHWEST
The dramatic ending of North by Northwest
takes place on Mount Rushmore, a cliff carved with giant faces of 4
US Presidents. I can't replicate that in Hastings - but can come
close in the cliffs upon which Hastings Castle is built. The clues
will lead you to a cache site in that area.
Critics have described this film as
'Hitchcock's most stylish thriller, if not his best". With Cary
Grant as the male lead and Eva Marie-Saint as yet another cool
blonde Hitchcock heroine, it is a polished and gripping thriller
laced with humour.
This is a tale of mistaken identity.New York
businessman Roger Thornhill is mistaken for a government agent by a
gang of spies. He gets involved in a series of misadventures,
including being chased across a cornfield by a biplane and at the
film's climax, he and Eve clamber over Mount Rushmore to escape
from murderous spies.
The start coordinates take you near the doors of the West Hill
Lift.
