Geocache Description:

This cache was placed to honor all Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts under the Katahdin Area Council.
When redoing the traffic pattern in Brewer in 1996 (where the parking area for Irving is) the old Council building was demolished and built in it’s present location.

This cache was placed with permission.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is one of the largest youth organizations in the United States, with over four million youth members in its age-related divisions. Since its founding in February of 1910 as part of the international Scout Movement, more than 110 million Americans have been members of the BSA. Thus, the Boy Scouts of America will celebrate their 100th Anniversary in February 2010.

The local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts are affiliated with Katahdin Area Council. Although Katahdin Area Council claims 1920 as its starting date, Bangor Council actually began operation in 1919. The Council changed its name to Penobscot Council in 1924 and to Katahdin Area Council in 1929. Present day Katahdin Area Council contains 17,981 square miles (46,570 km2), making it the largest council in land area east of the Mississippi. With nearly 3000 adults and 6000 youth, Katahdin Area Council has one of the highest adult-youth ratios in the country. There are only two Councils in the state of Maine. The other is in Portland...the Pine Tree Council.

I am a 1st class scout very close to receiving my star…. If you are or were in scouting… when you log the cache… please share your scouting experience in your log.

Congratulation to Hollora for the FTF
