Founded in 1886, Winthrop University (www.winthrop.edu) is a
public, coeducational, comprehensive teaching university that
teaches students to Live, Learn, and Lead. Winthrop’s Main
Campus, located on two sides of Oakland Ave., contains most of the
educational and residential buildings, while “The Farm”
area located off of Eden Terrace, contains Athletic and
recreational facilities. Winthrop welcomes geocachers but any
disturbance or interference with the educational focus of the
institution will result in the cacher being asked to leave the
premise. Visitors to the campus must follow all traffic regulations
and park only in those areas identified as Visitor Parking, or
drivers may be ticketed and cars towed.”
The Little Chapel was designed in the Federal style by architect
Robert Mills, a South Carolinian famous for his design of the
Washington Monument. Erected as a stable and carriage house for
Ainsley Hall mansion in Columbia, S.C., it eventually became
property of the Presbyterian Church and was used by the Columbia
Theological Seminary. In 1886, when David Bancroft Johnson founded
the Winthrop Training School for Teachers, the chapel became the
original classroom for this innovative new school. In 1936 the
chapel was given to Winthrop by the seminary, and the structure was
moved to Rock Hill, where it was reconstructed brick by brick. The
Little Chapel underwent a renovation in 2005, at which time a
bronze bust of Johnson was relocated from front campus to the
chapel. The bust overlooks a unique sculpture garden that is one of
Winthrop's public art sites.
This cache is placed with permission from Winthrop and meets the
requirements set forth in the Winthrop University Geocaching
Guidelines. It is located close to the Little Chapel and you are
encouraged to take the time to look around this beautiful and
historical old building as well as the grounds and other buildings
on Winthrop’s campus. Additional information about the Chapel
may be found on several plaques located in front of the building.
If special events are going on in the Chapel, please do not disturb
the event or the guests. Depending upon the event, you may be asked
to leave and come back at another time.
