Red Apple Rest Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

BriGuyNY: Like the building itself, I'm just going to put this one to rest. It's gone through a great deal of replacement containers and there isn't much real estate left at this site to warrant a new location either (railroad tracks out back, a major thoroughfare out front, and a residence along the property edge). I really enjoyed reading everyone's stories about this old historic rest area, and it'll be sad to see the building demolished one day. I hate archiving my caches, but this one has ran its course. Thanks for the memories.

Geocache Description:

A cache located near one of America's oldest rest areas.

Before the days of the New York State Thruway, this was THE place to be while traveling on Route 17 between New York City and the Catskills from the 1930s and 1970s. Since then it has fallen victim to age and a change of culture. Who drives on local highways anymore? Why not take the quickest route and stop at modern rest areas? That's what fast-paced modern society said. Without a steady business, the facility closed in 2006 and was eventually condemned in 2007 due to disrepair. It looks like the time is up for this fine piece of history, but for now, the structure and the memories still remain.

This cache wasn't made to be all that difficult because I'm hoping it will act similar to the days of this facility, serving as a resting place for travel items, bugs, dog tags, whatever is moving from place to place along Route 17. If you have any stories about this building please share them in your logs.

If you have any problems finding it, blame GOEX, for supplying the new admin-friendly location idea. I, on the other hand, thought the southeast corner with creepy machinery and an old doorway tunnel to nowhere was a perfect idea for caching at night!

Congrats on FTF: PenguinLady & tetleyt!
