Das Stalag Luft III (abkürzende Bezeichnung für Stammlager der Luftwaffe) wurde im Mai 1942 in einem Wald in der Nähe der Stadt Sagan (heute polnisch: Zagan) und des dortigen Kriegsgefangenlagers des Heeres Stalag VIII-C in Niederschlesien gegründet. Es war eines von sechs deutschen Kriegsgefangenenlagern, das speziell für die steigende Anzahl gefangener gegnerischer Luftwaffenangehöriger vorgesehen war. Während in der Anfangszeit hauptsächlich Briten und Amerikaner inhaftiert waren, kamen später auch Piloten anderer Nationen hinzu. Im Juni 1944 beherbergte das Lager 10.494 Offiziere und Unteroffiziere der Luftwaffen.

Stalag III wurde hauptsächlich durch einige Ausbrüche bekannt. Bei der größten Fluchtaktion fanden so über 80 Soldaten vorübergehend den Weg in die Freiheit. Dieser Ausbruch wurde später unter dem Titel Gesprengte Ketten verfilmt.

The Stalag air III (shortening name for family camp of the air force) became Polish in May, 1942 in a wood near the city of Sagan (today: Zaga n) and the prisoner's of war camp there of the army Stalag VIII C in Lower Silesia founded. It was one of six German prisoner's of war storages which was planned especially for the rising number of caught opposing air force members. While in the beginning time primarily Britons and Americans were arrested, pilots of other nations also came later. In June, 1944 the camp accommodated 10.494 officers and noncommissioned officers of the air forces. Stalag III became known primarily by some outbreaks. More than 80 soldiers found with the biggest escape action thus temporarily the way in the freedom. This outbreak was filmed later under the title sprinkled chains.
