Geocache Description:

Na gricu Stari grad (241m) nad Vipavo stojijo mogocne razvaline gradu Vipava (Alt Wippach). / On the hill Stari grad (241m) above city Vipava stand mighty ruins of castle Old Vipava (Alt Wippach)

L. 1508 so grad zasedli Benecani in ga delno razdejali.

On the hill Stari grad (241m) above city Vipava stand mighty ruins of castle Old Vipava (Alt Wippach), which was build in 12th century by the Patriarchate of Aquileia.
The location of the castle has been populated since prehistoric times, is also assumed that the late Roman fort on the hill. Again, the hill was inhabited around 1100. Throughout the centuries the castle changed its owners several times, the most famous are Counts of Celje and the Habsburgs. In 1508 the castle was conquered by the Venetians was partialy demolished. It began to fall apart in the 17th century, when the then owners, the Counts Lanthieri, moved to a new city, which was built at the foot of the hill in Vipava. On Valvasor image of the castle from 1678 the castle is ruined. In the 18th and 19 century, the remains of the castle was used as a quarry for stones with which they build houses in Vipava.
In 1987, the castle remains have been declared cultural and historical monument and natural attraction.
