Geocache Description:

Counterbalance is a sculpture to recognise the Centenary of Loxton in 2007.

The site for the original proposal was to have been in the main street of Loxton, East Terrace, on an existing concrete slab. That design was deemed not to reflect the image that Loxton's community wanted to project. As a result a committee was formed to further develop the the concept of a Centenary Feature, which would be inclusive and of interest, interactive and reflect Loxton's community spirit, celebrating the past and building optimism for the future. The committee conducted an extensive consultation process with the community and received a grant to engage artists to produce designs and eventually Counterbalance was selected as the "winner". The model of the design was displayed in local schools and the town library. Although the design is not to everyone's taste, it is certainly highly visible and unique. High School students were involved in the surrounding landscaping and came up with the "sundial" concept and many locals made donations to support its construction. At the instigation of the community the Loxton Waikerie Council worked hard to purchase nearby former railway land in order to further develop and beautify the area. There has been a lot of local controversy associated with this project from the initial design right through to the battle to obtain the nearby land. Regardless of this, the sculpture is now in place and will no doubt entice visitors to the town to stop and make their own judgement. Please bring your own pencil. A plea to local cachers in particular: please do not show your non-caching friends this cache hide, as they are likely to show it to others until it becomes common knowledge. This is what happened with another popular local cache, which was systematically vandalised and had to be archived as a result.
