The GeoZzyzx "1/2 Way Rocks" Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: This cache was brought to my attention via a Needs Archive log that says:

"The sign clearly reads "emergency parking only". If it were acceptable, peolple would be pulling over and having picnics in non-rest areas."

On review of the cache, I see several problems...

The first is the problem mentioned in the Needs Archive log. Contrary to the assertion of the cache owner, it is not legal in the state of California to stop in a limited access highway. Specifically California Vehicle Code Section 21718 says "No person shall stop, park, or leave standing any vehicle upon a freeway which has full control of access and no crossings at grade"

There are a number of exceptions provided (such as stopping due to the vehicle beng disabled.) Geocaching is not one of those exceptions.

Secondly, it appears that this "multicache" is not a true multicache, but rather two separate caches each with its own log book. It was never intended that a cache would be found at multiple locations. Each location should be a cache in and of it's own right.

Thirdly, the cache page states that "YOU MUST STATE IN YOUR LOG IF YOU FOUND NORTH OR SOUTH BOUND (or risk deletion)". Additional logging requirements are no longer allowed. Logs may not be deleted (nor may the cache owner imply such) if the logging requirements are not met.

Given all of this, I am archiving this cache listing to remove it from search pages.

Geocache Description:

The coordinates take you to stage one on the north going side of I-15. The final with the log is on the south-going side of I-15 across from the first stage, sort of. Each side has a safe wide shoulder and dirt pull-off road where you can park out of sight, safely behind the rocks. There are crossings over I-15 at one mile to the north of these rock piles (Outlet Center Drive) and a few miles to the south of them (Hodge Road). Both stages have a physical cache.

"The Geo Zzyzx"

In my story version about the infamous Zzyzx, the North and South going Zzyzx were seeking a geocache. 1 came from Barstow, the other from Victorville each with half of the puzzle. One didn't want to give the other their half of the coordinates without the other one first divulging theirs. Both eventually died because they stood toe to toe for so long and didn't even eat!

Their bodies were immortalized with the only thing as stubborn as they were about not budging... Two huge piles of rock! Of course the freeway could now be built between the two, so the piles were separated according to which way they were going. North.. and South.

The North going Zzyzx's pile is on the eastern side and the South-going has a pile on the western side. Each pile has a cache to be found. Not for those without good footwear and a hankering for climbing big rocks! These little mountains will leave you feeling accomplished if you can find the caches!

About "Half Way Rock"

When I was a bit younger, my sister, friends and I always referred to these piles as "1/2 Way Rock" because we thought it was about 1/2 way between the cities of Victorville and Barstow... Well it's really more like 2/3 or 3/4 as it turns out...
