A young man sits on his cell bunk, pondering where his life went wrong.
Suddenly, he is startled by someone yelling "Thirty-two!" from a cell across the way. The entire cell block bursts out into hysterical laughter. People are hemming and hawing, rolling in their cramped 2x3 cells. The new inmate appears puzzled at all this. As soon as the noise dies down, another inmate shouts out "Seventeen!" and again the entire cell block erupts into uproarious laughter. Guards quickly rush in to settle down the near riotous inmates.
Once the block mellows out, the new prisoner questions his cell mate about all he has just witnessed.
"Hey man, what's the deal with the numbers?", he asks.
"Them are codes", replies his cell mate, "joke codes."
"We got a lot of different types of codes around here. We have to. The guards can't know what were up to, so we find ways to disguise it. If were plannin' to shank somebody, we got codes for it. If were plannin' to bust outta here, we got codes for it. Hell, if were just talkin' about somebody's mama... we got codes for it. You'll learn. Them numbers they were yellin' are jokes. We ain't got but one joke book around here, and we all memorized the jokes in order. So instead of telling the whole joke, you just shout out the number and everyone knows which joke it is."
"I see", said the somewhat perplexed inmate.
The new inmate spends the next few days studying the joke book, selects his favorite joke and decides to give it a go. He awaits the perfect time and shouts out: "Forty-eight!"
He is met with complete and total silence. Nada. Nothing. So quiet you could hear a mouse fart.
"What gives?", he asks his cell mate. "Why didn't they laugh at mine?"
"Man..." he replies, "some people can tell a joke, some people can't."
