A camo'd thermos container in the woods, placed to commemorate another in my series of Moore County institutions that no longer exists.
The small rise on which this ammo can sets was once part of the track for the Pinehurst Electric Railroad Company. This was a trolly system that ran from 1896 until 1911. It was designed to pick up passengers at the Southern Pines depot (which was on a much busier rail line that the Pinehurst depot) and carry them into and around the resort town of Pinehurst. According to "Our State" magazine, ticket prices were 5 cents for a human passenger, and 2 cents for a crate of peaches.
At its peak, they ran a 9-mile, four car trolley line from the railroad depot in Southern Pines to the golf club at Pinehurst. Rumor has it (although some historians dispute this) that a "Pinehurst Junction" sign at the Southern Pines depot stirred a dispute between the communities which led to an irate Southern Pines removing its portion of the line in 1905; local Pinehurst trolley service lasted 6 more years, before the railway went bankrupt and the tracks were abandoned.
Another section of the tracks crosses the eighth fairway at Knollwood golf course. The area has been cleared and is marked with a commemorative marker.
