Here lies the ammo can that I won at the most recent picnic.
UPDATE 12/10/09 - The park is open seven days a week. The gate is closed to vehicles on some days during the week, but the park is open for foot traffic every day of the year. There is a portion of a field that has been leased to a construction firm to store equipment, but that area is marked and can be bypassed.
This cache is in an off-trail section of New Quarter Park. It is in the area that I originally considered for BE THERE #30, but I decided that the terrain (mostly deadfall from Isabel two years prior to the contest) might not be a fair spot for what turned out to be a head-to-head race. With the FTF prize (the right to place Curse #23) being slightly less valuable than what Magellan was offering, we'll now see how this original spot would have worked out.
I was hoping for more of a view across the creek to the east, but the holly is thicker there than I remember.
Marking your car as a waypoint is probably a good idea for this one. If your GPS fails you, take out your compass (y'all do carry those too, right?) and head west to get back to the road. I made it in and out without encountering any obstacle worse than a simple step-over. But I can't scout every possible route there is to this one. Two things to keep in mind when it comes to obstacles, is that around usually works better than through, and that high is usually better than low.
And one final caveat - Camp Peary is across a different creek than the one the cache is next to, but it is still close by, which means your GPS will get the infamous New Quarter/CIA triple bounce that the park is famous for.
