Geocache Description:

Well I wish it could be Christmas, every day

When the kids start singing and the band begins to play

Oh, I wish it could be Christmas, every day

Let the bells ring out for Christmas

(Roy Wood)

The practice of bringing evergreen foliage or trees into the dwelling place originated in pagan times and was associated with the Winter Solstice, around December 21. This was later adopted into Christian practise after the Church set December 25 as the celebration of the birth of Christ, thereby supplanting the pagan celebration of the solstice.
The custom of erecting a tree in the house and decorating it for the Christmas celebrations can be traced to 16th century Northern Germany, but it was not until the beginning of the nineteenth century that it spread rapidly and grew into a general German custom and eventually the world. In Britain, the Christmas tree was introduced by George 3rd's Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz in the early 1800s.
The most commonly used species are fir (Abies), which have the benefit of not shedding their needles when they dry out, as well as retaining good foliage colour and scent; but other species of evergreen conifers are also used.
