Woodstock Estate
The park and building are hidden in the inner west suburb of Burwood. Edwin Thomas Penfold, one of Australia's largest tobacco manufactureres, purchased 6 acres of land in 1871 and likely built Woodstock the following year. It is believed the building was named after the novel by Sir Walter Scott. The Penfold's sold it in 1895. It changed hands several times and was renamed "Broughton" in 1912 but remained in private ownership until 1942 when it was commandeered by the Commonwealth Government.
From 1942-46 it was used as an Army Base for the Australian Women's Army Service. After the war it was briefly owned by the MLC School but served primarily as Migrant Hostel welcoming European families for nearly 30 years until 1974. Burwood Council finally got their hands on the estate via a lease from the Commonwealth in 1976, and then purchased it in 1982, reinstating the original name "Woodstock". Since then the grounds have been transformed into a BBQ and playground park while the building primarily serves as a community centre available for hire. However, the building also houses 2RDJ Radio, a theatre troupe, and a childcare centre (which recently relocated to a custom build facility behind the original building).
Cache Notes:
FTF could owe me a new GPS with a scratchie on offer :) Also dropped off a TB to continue on its journey. Only smallest swaps will fit. Please replace camo very well! The 2 star rating is for stealthyness, finding the GZ shouldn't be too hard, but remaining undetected will be. If there are too many eyes around, best come back another time! ;)
Cache Upgrade 7th Oct 2010
'Woodstock' has been upgraded to 'Woodstock's Revenge'! After the famous "Sevabo Incident" a few months back the cache was in a temporary hide near the Guardians. I was never really happy with it so when it got filled with water twice in a week it was a good excuse to upgrade! :D New hide is sneakier and hopefully safe and dry. Stealth still required. Good Luck!
