When I first arrived to Greensboro in May 2004 to sell books door to door, I had no place to live, no money in my pocket and no job and no income. Me and my college roommate and 4 others had traveled from Oklahoma State University to Greensboro via Nashville for some Sales Training. When we arrived, we split into teams of 3 and we all went separate directions to canvass the neighborhood to find a place to live (nicknamed Headquarters). Our goal was simple-find a place to live for FREE for the entire summer. The other team found a place to live within an hour. We found a temporary place for a few weeks by 7pm. It was terrible. It was in an attic in this old home that had no AC. The temp would be over 100 degrees at night.
We had to find another Headquarters. My roommate Shawn, made the find. He actually sold this nice family a full set of books and they asked him where he was living. He said that they were living in a temporary location and that we were actually still looking for a permanent place. They said that they had a basement with a full bathroom and beds. It also had a family room with a TV. Plus it was fully finished including AC!
When I got home that night after a long day of selling books (about 9pm), I had no idea what was going on. Shawn had packed up all of his stuff and was waiting for me. He was the one who talked me into doing this whole door to door thing in the first place. As I pulled up my first thought was that he was going back home. He then said that he was, in fact, leaving and asked if I wanted to go too. I said no, that I was committed for the summer and I was staying in Greensboro. He said that he was too, but was moving that night to go to the "new" headquarters. He instructed me to follow him. We then drove north on Lake Brandt Road for what seemed like forever. We ended up pulling into this very location where you are now standing. He told me that the next drive was the new place and for me to avoid hitting the Lexus and the Delorean in the driveway. We then drove down the driveway and in fact those cars were there. We parked around back it was very dark. When I got out of the car, Shawn made me close my eyes as he lead me to the door. When he opened the door, a blast of frigid cold air made its way past my dead tired body. I was elated.
We were able to stay rent-free for the entire summer. It made for a great HQ and really helped us succeed that summer. After the summer was over, I in fact was able to stay for several months until I eventually moved into an apartment.
This cache is a tribute to the Bulluck Family for giving me and Shawn a place to stay when we really needed it and for being so nice to us the entire summer and beyond. They went out of their way to make us feel at home. Thank you Bunny and David.
