Geocache Description:

The Moses Mabida Stadium is a sport stadium created in Durban as a direct result of South Africa winning the right to host the 2010 World Cup Soccer tournament.

The stadium is constructed on the grounds of the former Kings Park Soccer Stadium, in the Durban sports precinct. The stadium will have the capacity to hold 70,000 spectators during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Its design allows the stadium seating to be reduced to 54,000 for local matches or up-scaled to 80,000 for events such as the Olympic Games. There are 150 corporate hospitality suites with 7,500 seats.

The design is extremely impressive with the focal point being the 360m long Y-shaped arch taking it's inspiration from the South African flag. The arch was constructed in Germany and transported to South Africa in a number of pieces. It is the longest arch of its kind in the sporting world with a weight equivalent of 2,287 elephants.

In addition the South end is open so that the inside of the stadium can be viewed from the city side and visa versa. The stadium roof consists of a 46,000 square metres, Teflon-coated, glass-fibre membrane, produced in Mexico, which will produce a translucent glow when the stadium is lit. These are attached to the arch by 17000m of 95mm diameter steel cables.

Even those that are not fans of the sports hosted at the stadium can enjoy this spectacular stadium in a number of ways.

The Sky Car (imported from Switzerland) allows you to travel to the viewing platform on top of the arch some 106m above the ground for a panoramic view of Durban. The cost of the sky car is R50 per adult and R25 per child. For the more adventurous there is the harness climb up the southern side at a cost of R75 per person. Bungee jumping from the top of the arch will be introduced shortly.

Tours of the stadium are available at R20 per person for the standard tour and R75 per person for the professional tour.
