Geocache Description:

Cache site is fairly level ground with some undergrowth.
Do NOT go near the falling down old farmhouse as it is not safe, the cache is to the left of it if you are facing the house from the road.
Cache is a small silver bison tube.
There is plenty of parking at the site.

This is #37 in our "WEIRD SC" Series which will consist of caches placed at locations where either ghosts, unknown creatures, or just plain weird things have occurred or exist.

We think our State Motto should change to "Smiling Faces, Haunted Places.

If you travel out in this part of Orangeburg County much you will already know that there are many old, wooden farmhouses falling apart in the area.
They dot the landscape, hiding stories of great joy and misery, triumph and woe.

But just past the Edisto Fire Dept. Station 2 sits an old farmhouse that hides a dark and terrible secret.

To look at the fallen in porch, the collapsed roof, and the trees growing through the old house you would not think much of it.
But this old house holds a dark, evil past that some think has never ended.

It seems that many years ago an old woman lived in the house by herself.
As she was known to rarely bathe, had long, disheveled hair, and talked to herself many in the area claimed she was a witch.

It seems the more the rumour spread the more unstable the woman became.

When a mysterious outbreak of livestock deaths occured in the area; probably caused by a spread of disease; many whispered that the Witch had done it.

As the story goes one day someone noticed that the "witch" had not been seen outside; nor had any smoke from a fire risen from her chimney for several days; even though it was particularly cold at the time.

A brave local Deacon from a nearby church; unfrightened by superstitous nonsense, went to investigate.
Upon not recieveing an answer at her door he walked to the left side of the farmhouse. As he did so he saw the most horrifying sight of his life.

There, in a large oak tree was the old woman; her lifeless body tied to the tree by barbed wire; blood pooled down at her feet.

After the Deacon fetched help and the local Sheriff responded to investigate people were claiming that the Devil had taken her.

With no real clues; just a strong suspicion that the superstitous locals had killed the old "witch"; the Sheriff quickly lost interest in the case.

It was never solved.

According to the legend not a single person ever entered the house after her death; and it remains to this day as it did back then; except for the ravages of age.
Locals say that late at night you can hear screams of pain coming from the area of the old oak.
They also say that the blood of the old "Witch" stained the tree and is still visible

When Aries first heard this story he didn't put much stock in it. But when the local guide he cajoled into taking him there refused to walk onto the property Aries laughed and set off to find a place to hide the cache.

AS he went to the left of the house he noticed a huge Oak tree off to the side. Startled by a noise he turned to see it was only his "guide" taking off in his pick-up truck.

As Aries turned back to the tree to place the cache his eyes locked onto a strange sight.

Barbed wire was sticking out of the tree in numerous places where the tree had grown around it. And there was a curious red stain on the trunk of the tree where the barbed wire sticks out.

Don't believe it?
Go look for yourself.
IF you dare......
