Geocache Description:

What you see here is the shaft to “Bronäsgruvan” - the Bronäs Mine, that was mined from 1940s to 1962. The ore that was mined here was very rich in silver and lead. The record was reached in 1956 when as much as 5600 kilograms pure silver was mined. That is the largest silver mine production in the history of this mine! Often, production amounted to 4-5 tons of silver and 500 tons of lead per year.

In the early 1960s the shaft reached down to 155 meters depth in Bronäsgruvan. At this time there was a tragic accident in the mine. In 1960, miner Sigurd Johansson fell 16 meters from the 105 m level in Bronäsgruvan. He was killed in the accident at 63 years of age. Work continued, but only two years later, in 1962 the company was forced to shut Bronäsgruvan down. The mine deposits went into city-planned areas and the property owners did not want mining under their plots. This ended the era of Bronäsgruvan. Since then, the stately Bronäs shaft’s superstructure has been demolished and the mine flooded.

Only on one occasion since has the Bronäs-mine been noted. In 1990, one of the subterranean chambers near the main road to Vasteras caved in. It flushed away parts of the cycle-path and created a huge, water-filled hole.
