Historical Note:
Straiton Community Hall was built by community volunteers
starting in 1949. Prior to that date the Straiton Community club
operated from homes and the one room Straiton School.
Straiton Community Club's records date back to the 1920’s
and indicate the club was well established at that time.
Their programs include:
Providing a venue to the community to pursue political,
environmental and other current issues as well as for their family
and other special occasions.
- Seasonal craft, games and discovery programs (New in 2008 were
the summer “Spot the Aliens” (flora and fauna) and
“What Tree is That?” programs for children).
- Games nights for children, youth and adults – basketball
skills, old fashioned games, board game night
- Special programs – Mother and Daughter nights, Straiton
Heritage Day, Community Barbecue, “Survivor” games for
children
- Seasonal holiday programs for Valentines, Easter Egg Hunt,
Mothers and Fathers Days, Halloween, Remembrance Day, Thanksgiving,
Christmas.
They feel fostering a sense of place through their programs is
one of their most important functions. A facet of Straiton or
Canadian Heritage is included in most programs. For example,
mini-basketball for preschoolers includes the information that
basketball was invented by a Canadian. For older kids, more
information is included. Straiton Heritage day includes their local
history but also symbols of Canada that can be understood by young
children. They try to make their recreational programs engaging by
including some educational and some fun aspects to them.
