The Multicache is the start co-ordinates for the question to answer to the first clue for this Magnetic Key-Locker. There is also a convenient place to park for free. You will have to chose your time correct as Muggles may hinder your find.

There’s something at Heybridge Basin to suit every taste. The Basin is where the Chelmer and Blackwater canal meets the tidal Blackwater estuary, where fresh water merges with salt water. This Essex riverside village retains much of the character of a bygone age and it’s a wonderful place to unwind.

In the winter you can enjoy the solitude, in spring there are the hardy walkers, avid birdwatchers and the first of the boat owners venture forth with varnish and great intentions. During the summer the Basin is alive with action and from daybreak to dusk it’s a great place to sit and watch the comings and going of river and riverside life. Some say autumn is the best time to sit and enjoy the views across the river to Northey and Osea Islands.

At high tide you can sit by the sea wall and watch the craft going through the sea lock or maybe catch a glimpse of one of the old barges making their way along the Blackwater towards the sea.

The two pubs that once served to quench the thirst of the basin workers and visiting sailors now cater for the tourists visiting this picturesque area. There is also a gallery, a lock keeper, a riverside shop and tea rooms run by the world famous Tiptree Jam Co.

The village of Heybridge Basin grew up around the lock as there was plenty of work unloading the ships into the canal barges. The village has continued to expand into the 21st century despite the cessation of commercial activities on the canal. This expansion has continued because of the excellent sailing facilities on the River Blackwater and also because of the 150-200 yachts permanently moored in the Basin. It was here that the Colliers' barges unloaded for the journey inland. Construction of the 13 mile canal to Chelmsford commenced in 1793 under the general direction of John Rennie. In 1796 the first ship entered the basin with a cargo of coal for Chelmsford.

The basin at Heybridge was dug out at the sea end of the navigation to allow lighters to enter the canal via the sea lock for the unloading of their cargos for transportation inland. The stretch of canal between the Basin and Beeleigh was cut out by hand to bypass Maldon because the town opposed the building of the canal fearing loss of trade in the port.

William Bentall moved his iron foundry from Goldhanger to a site next to the canal in the village of Heybridge because of the benefits of being able to bring raw materials right up to the works.
