Chuck’s Story #2 –

A rodent like me has to always be thinking about food, especially in the fall. This is the time of year when you stash some away for a rainy, cold, snowy, icy, windy couple of months and hope you make it through. Me and my compadres have a few sayings: “Food before frost, or your lost,” or “better store up some grub, or you’ll be one cold bub,” and my favorite: “Gather while its green, or the winter months will be lean.”

So one day I was out gathering acorns and I came up with a pretty good pile, but I got distracted watching a late-season softball game at the bottom of the hill. Pretty soon it was getting dark and I knew I didn’t have time to get all the food back up into the woods until tomorrow. That’s when I recalled the time my cousin’s food stashes kept getting raided by Robins. He eventually got so clever and sneaky in hiding his stuff that he sometimes couldn’t even find it himself. Anyway, one of his famous stashes was nearby.

I decided to deposit my acorns in there, and come back later when I had more daylight. It worked out perfectly, and I am pretty sure the hiding place is still there. Since then, I think some other vermin have started hiding other, smaller items, there. It should be right up your alley.
