Geocache Description:

Black coal mined from an open cut mine at Leigh Creek is then transported 250 km by a wagon coal train of about 3km length, The coal is delivered to the power station at Port Augusta on a one train per day, six trains per week cycle utilising 161 wagons and carrying approx 11000 tons of coal to the power stations outside Port Augusta on the east side of the top of Spencer Gulf.

The coal occurs in several nested bowl-shaped seams, each several metres thick. The coalfield at Leigh Creek is operated by NRG Flinders and currently produces over 2.5 million tonnes a year of coal. NRG Flinders also operate the power stations at Port Augusta which produce up to 40 per cent of the electricity generated in South Australia.

The train takes approx five and a half hours to travel between Port Augusta and Leigh Creek, and with one return trip every day of the year accidents have to happen, recently there was a report of a derailment, and another a couple of years ago. Imagine the force weight and damage that could do whilst travelling at speed!

The cache location has a number of coal trucks damaged in a derailment, huge and heavy gauge steel trucks folded up like tin foil, or torn like paper.
