The design of the Fairview overpass is similar to the overpass in
Quebec that collapsed. The concrete elements of the structure were
in really bad shape, so it was time to overhaul it.
The original proposal was to start the work in spring of 2009 and
that the work would lasts for 6 months. The price tag was 5-6
million dollars. Unfortunately for the public, the construction was
delayed until the fall and started only on October 5, 2009. The
plan for the reconstruction is to work on one section at a time,
keeping the other one open for the traffic.
At the time of the cache placement (2 months from the time zero)
the in-land section has been demolished and they were working on
the right bank digging dirt. It seems to me that they are way
behind the schedule since at 3 months the first section has to be
finished already, which looks unrealistic.
I predict that the works on the overpass will take at least 1.5
times more time and will be 2 times more expensive.
So let’s log their progress.
Update 14 April 2010: They are almost over. The overpass
looks nice now. Only one half of the overpass is going to be
replaced. I was wrong with my predictions as I thought they are
going to overhaul the whole thing. It looks like they are going to
be just 1 month late. I wonder if car traffic from Main Ave. will
be allowed to the overpass now
Update 17 April 2010: The second section is open again!
As before only buses allowed from Main Ave.
