This is what I hope will become a series of caches for several Indiana counties. The 92 Indiana courthouses include many examples of some magnificent architecture. The 50 years following the Civil War saw many counties make serious investments in new courthouses. Sometimes the expenditures nearly equaled the value of the entire county. Many of these courthouses are still in use today and are still the most striking buildings in those county seats. The 2nd entry in the series is Marion County. This is one of the new courthouses in the state, being built between 1960-1962. It is the third courthouse built for Marion County. Planning for the new building began in 1957 and it was decided then it would house the offices for both Marion County and the city of Indianapolis. It became known as the City-County Building. For many years this was the tallest building in Indianapolis at 28 stories. There is still an observation deck at the top with great views of Indianapolis. Specifications for the courthouse are: Built: 1960-1962 Architect: Allied Architects & Engineers. General Contractor: Huber, Hunt & Nichols Cost: $25.5 million Size: Over a million square feet
