Geocache Description:

The cache, brings you to a location known as Bird Lake. The cache cannot be accessed when in use. Check the clue?. It can be difficult to reach if campers are near by although camping is prohibited, for this area. The shrimp and birds have disappeared, and the lake is drying up because of no seawater flow.

Bird lake is a shallow salt water lake that provides a food source to many seabirds in the form of Brine Shrimp. Brine shrimp can be seen from the small platform constructed near by, swimming below the surface of the water on a calm day. The Salt water was pumped into the Lake, from the Local power station, through it's fly ash slurry pipelines, into settling ponds and excess water flows into the lake. On a windy day foam is created due to the increased salinity levels within the lake, and blows across the main highway. Control measures have been introduced, with the landscaping of the highway. At times the lake produces a strong unpleasant odour, it is know locally as Lake Knock Out. Be Prepared. Bird Lake does provide a mirror image of the power station, and Flinders ranges on calm days, producing the perfect photograph. The Power Station ceased operate on the 9th of May 2016, and was shut down.
