Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden along the “Old Mill Road” (aka the Baldy Pass Trail), located in the Lusk Valley a few kilometres SSE of the intersection of highways 40 & 68.

The Old Mill Road was, once upon a time, the main access to a sawmill located in the Lusk Valley. It starts from The U of C Forestry Research Field Station near Barrier Lake and runs east for several hundred meters before turning south to head up the Lusk Valley. Once the mill closed down the road became mainly a hike/bike trail giving east access to Baldy Pass as well as access to Lusk Pass via a connecter trail. A section of the road has now been designated as part of the Trans Canada Trail system. Industrial use of the road temporarily resumed a few years ago when Spray Lakes Sawmill logged the large cut blocks on the slopes of Baldy Mountain. The logging has been completed and the trails have been cleaned up and returned to the hiking community. There are a number of other interesting trails in the area, including some new trail construction, all of which are worth exploring via hiking, biking or snowshoeing. I have included a piece of topo map showing my track logs of most of the trails.

Official access for these trails is located at the U of C Station (WP002) or at Lusk Creek RA (WP001). From the U of C Station parking area follow the gravel road that starts at the east side of the main parking lot. It goes around a small hill, passes by some houses and trailers before arriving at the gated and signed trailhead (TCT sign). From the Lusk Creek RA parking area just cross Hwy 68 to the diagonal trail that goes up the embankment and head towards WP003. Parking is also possible at the approach to the Stoney Creek Group Campground on Hwy 68, but only during times the campground is closed (don’t block the gate). I have also given a waypoint (WP003) which is the point where all these access trails join the Old Mill Road just as it turns and heads south.

The cache is a smallish LnL, within a wooden box located in a winter friendly spot. There are a few trading items, an unactivated micro coin for the FTF and a package of my geocaching note cards for the STF. So, come on out and enjoy a walk in this lovely area (even with the cut blocks).
