Over, Under, and Through! Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

CaneMaster: It is time to archive this geocache for safety reasons.

This part of downtown used to be a popular shopping and recreational area, with the downtown YMCA, a nice hotel, hair salons, restaurants, investment companies, a bicycle store, a quaint lake with a paved 1 mile jogging trail, and benches on manicured lawns around the lake. The jogging trail wound its way through woods and fields, over a bridge across the lake, and through a tunnel which went under the road so that no joggers would ever have to jog across traffic. It was a very popular trail which was used every day by YMCA members, guests at the hotel, employees at the many upscale businesses located along it, as well as by nature lovers, and Jackson runners.

Unfortunately this part of downtown Jackson has gone down hill. The cycle store, hair styling salons, and restaurants relocated. It really went down hill very quickly after the YMCA closed leaving an abandoned building with unmaintained lawns and parking lots. Then the hotel closed. Now, tall grass has grown over most of the old unmaintained jogging trail, trash and debris liters the area and we wouldn't consider it safe to send any geocachers back into those overgrown woods.

If Jackson ever gets its act together and becomes a beautiful and safe place to live, work, and play again, we will bring Over, Under, and Through back again.

This was our very first geocache hide. We hid it in 2009 . It had a long and popular run as a difficult, but fun adventure. While several folks who logged it, requested the coordinates to the last stage from previous finders and thus bypassed the fun first three stages, the following list of finders were documented by CaneMaster as having found all four stages without any help.

Geocache Description:

This is the Cane Master Family’s first hide. We are: CaneMaster, CachingCzech, Sente, and RockThrower.

THE JOY IS IN THE JOURNEY

The Joy for the hider of multi-stage caches is in taking the hunter through a series of stages culminating in the final paper log at the end. To bypass any of the stages along the way is to rob the hider of this joy.

The joy for the finder is not in adding one more find to their geocaching statistics. The joy for the finder is in experiencing a journey which culminates in an exciting end. And yet, the joy is not in the end, its in the journey.

That is the way we feel about this hide. We designed four progressively challenging stages, each one a reward in and of itself, culminating in the final reward of signing the log at the end. Please don’t cheat by getting hints which help you bypass a stage. You will not only be cheating us out of our joy in preparing this hide for you, but you will also be cheating yourself out of a fun and rewarding journey.

If you are having trouble with a stage and call in a lifeline to a previous finder, only ask them for hints on the stage that you are having trouble with. Do not ask for hints on any of the others stages.

If after this you are still having trouble finding a stage, then post a note to us on this page alerting us, or send us an e-mail via our profile page and we will check the stage for you to make sure it is still there. If it is gone we will promptly replace it. If it is still there we will be happy to give you hints which will help you find the stage. Either way, we promise to get back to you in a timely manner so that you can get back to the hunt. All we ask is that you not rob us of our joy by bypassing any of the stages.

HOW TO GET ON THE CONFIRMED FINDERS LIST

To reward everyone who has PROVEN that they have not bypassed a stage, but have indeed found ALL FOUR STAGES of Over, Under, and Through! we are creating this list of Confirmed Finders.

To have your name placed on this list of Confirmed Finders you must do the following:

1. Sign the Log in the Stage Four Container.

2. Send us an e-mail via our profile page (visit link) telling us what is written on the back side of the slips of paper in the Stage One, Stage Two, and Stage Three containers.

The front side, of each of these slips of paper, has the coded coordinates to the next stage. The back side, of each of these slips of paper, has something else written on it. We change what is written on the back of these slips of paper as soon as someone logs the cache as found. We also change them every month or so. What you email us must match what is on the slips of paper on the day you sign the Online Log. So you don’t want to wait too long after signing the final stage log sheet to sign the online log.

Also, if completing this cache takes you more than one day (as is usually the case) you will want to revisit each stage after finding and signing the log in the final stage. Otherwise previous stage slips might have been replaced with new ones.

ALREADY FOUND IT?

If you have already found all four stages of this cache and logged it online we will be happy to add your name to the list of Confirmed Finders. All you have to do is:

1. Revisit Stages One, Two and Three (You do not have to go back to Stage Four :-)

2. On the day that you revisit these three stages, send us an e-mail via our profile page telling us what is written on the back side of the slips of paper in the Stage One, Stage Two, and Stage Three containers.

It should be a lot easier since you have already visited these three stages and basically know where to look.

DETAILS OF THE HUNT

This four stage hunt will take you all the way around a paved one mile walking/jogging trail, located near I-55 in downtown Jackson.

We designed it to slow down some of you First-To-Find (FTF) cachers we keep signing just after!

We also designed it to be a challenging, but fun adventure for multiple geocachers to hunt for together as a group.

As for the above listed difficulty and terrain ratings: We used geocaching.com’s online questionnaire and it came up with these ratings. We think they may be too high, but we will let y’all decide and tell us what you think through your online logs. We did try to be as clever as possible with these hides and to make it harder we will refrain from telling you what size or types of containers are at each of these stages. As for the terrain you will be covering during your hunt and at the stages, “most” of it is really a 1 or 1.5.

The coordinates given on this page is a parking lot where you will need to park your vehicle. These coordinates are also the exact spot where you will need to start your hunt and begin hiking along this trail.

All four stages are hidden on or near this walking trail. You will end up walking all the way around this trail as you find each stage.

This jogging trail is very popular and depending upon the season and time of day it can have a good many joggers and walkers exercising along it. It winds around a small pond, which at one time was part of the Pearl River, before it changed its course. There is also a nice little creek running beside part of it. You will need to exercise extreme stealth (as always right?) so that the walkers and joggers and folks looking out of business windows don’t get suspicious or see any of the cache containers.

Darkness would greatly increase the difficulty of this hunt, but would also increase the adventure and fun of it as well, especially if you have never been on this trail before. However, since this is near the downtown area I would NOT recommend being on this trail alone after dark. So if you do decide to do this hunt after dark please bring one or more friends with you, bring several flashlights, and you might even want to bring a cane or walking stick with you for safety.

Part of the walking trail is near Interstate I-55. There is a fence along that part of the walking trail placed there to prevent folks from wandering over to the interstate. Do NOT climb over the fence! If any of the lawn mower access gates along the fence are unlocked or open, do NOT go through them to the other side. It is illegal for pedestrians and cyclists to be on the interstate side of the fence.

I say the above as a warning for safety and legal reasons just in case your GPSr happens to be bouncing around and makes you think that you need to go on the interstate side of the fence. No matter what your GPSr may say, you will NOT need to go over to the interstate side of the fence. All of the stages are on the walking trail side of the fence and all of your best routes to each stage are also on the walking trail side of the fence.

The above listed coordinates (at the parking lot) is also the exact spot where you will need to be to find the solution to the simple alphanumeric substitution cipher which you will need to use throughout this hunt to decipher the coordinates to each of the of the four stages.

When you arrive at the parking lot and get out of your vehicle, look around for a sign from above. Use the sign and the following information to figure out the alphanumeric substitution cipher which all the coordinates will be written in. (If you need help finding the sign use the clue given in the Additional Hint.)

On the sign in the order the letters appear:

1st Letter = 9
2nd Letter = 8
3rd Letter = 7
5th Letter = 6
7th Letter = 5
9th Letter = 4
11th Letter = 3
12th Letter = 2
13th Letter = 1
15th Letter = 0

After you have assigned the above numbers to the correct letters on the sign you will have the alphanumeric cipher necessary to decipher the coordinates to all four stages. You will need to bring pen and paper with you on this hunt.

***IMPORTANT TEMPORARY UPDATE***
August 23, 2018

The sign from above has changed, so until we create a new code based on the new sign, forget about trying to figure out the code using the above information. Here is the exact code you will need to find each of the stages:

A = 9
B = 8
C = 7
D = 1
E = 2
I = 4
O = 5
S = 6
T = 3
U = 0

***END OF IMPORTANT TEMPORARY UPDATE***

The First Stage Coordinates are: N TE° DB.EDIO' W UAU° UA.CICT'

The cache container at each stage has the encrypted coordinates to the next stage.

The fourth stage is the final stage and it has the log book. You must sign the log book in the cache container at stage four to log this online as found. However, if you are having trouble finding one or more of these stages please log in with a Did-Not-Find (DNF) and let us know which stages you did find. That way we can track how difficult or easy folks are finding this hunt to be.

Please do not post any text or photos which might remove the mystery of this hunt or make this hunt easier for other geocachers. If you need a hint you can call in a lifeline by sending us an e-mail through our CaneMaster geocaching.com account.

Please place EVERYTHING back exactly where found and exactly as found. If you have reason to believe that something has been moved or messed with please send us an e-mail

Please don’t place any markers or clues which might help other geocachers.

We encourage you to take a friend with you and have fun with this one!
