Cache is not located at the listed coordinates! (and there is no reason to go there) The info should be available on the internet (that's where I found it). Long-time Baytonians may have it memorized!
The original cache got bulldozed in the name of pipeline progress, so you are now looking for a camo'd soda tube -- bring your own pen. Convenient parking within 100 yards (one football field) of the cache!
History:
"The Battle of Baytown" is the annual football game between the two rival high schools in Baytown -- the Robert E. Lee Ganders and the Ross S. Sterling Rangers. Lee High School held football supremacy in Baytown for over 40 years until a new high school had to be built to accomodate Baytown's growing population. Sterling High School opened in 1966 and began playing varsity sports a year later. The annual Lee/Sterling football game quickly developed into an intense rivalry, and became known to locals as simply "THE GAME". In the early years, the contest was the Homecoming game for both schools (regardless of which team was the "home" team) and both schools held bonfire pep rallies before the game. There was the usual shenanigans of students trying to sneak onto the other school's campus to attempt to steal their mascot or to light off their bonfire prematurely (typically the night before the scheduled pep rally). I was a student at Sterling during the mid 70's, however, and can swear that I never participated in anything like this. Honest. Truly. You can trust me.
For the first few years, the games were played in the old Memorial Stadium on the Lee campus, before moving to the newly constructed Stallworth Stadium in 1970. I've been fortunate enough over the years to attend most of the contests. My dad took me to the very first game in 1966 (a junior varsity version since Sterling did not yet play varsity sports) -- the result of which was a 0-0 tie. I was 8 years old at the time and it made quite an impression on me!
I was also lucky in that my Rangers won every game the entire time I was in high school. Although they were all close, hard-fought affairs, it sure was fun having bragging rights for the next year! More recently, the tables have turned and the Lee Ganders have enjoyed quite a few long winning streaks.
In 2008, a third high school, Goose Creek Memorial opened in Baytown but it wasn't until the final game of the 2010 season that they finally played a game against one of the other Baytown schools -- a 49-21 victory over Lee. Maybe we finally have a new rivalry to go along with the original!
