Geocache Description:

Still Hollow Farm is a Tennessee Century Farm and on the Quilt Trail. It is also home to an archeological dig by the University of Tennessee.

Still Hollow Farm, located on the banks of the Nolichucky River, is one of five in Greene County that is involved in the relatively new concept of agritourism. It is designated as a "Tennessee Century Farm" and is a stop on the Quilt Trail, having the “Ear of Corn” design on its 150-year-old granary that is also home to The Farmer’s Wife shop.

Five generations of family have lived in the Allen/Birdwell house and farmed the surrounding lands. James Allen Sr. established the original farm of 560 acres about nine miles southwest of Greeneville in 1857. He continued to purchase more land and eventually would own over one thousand acres. Today, the Birdwells farm around 180 acres of the original land.

Long before that, Native Americans also lived in the same location, according to recent finds by the University of Tennessee Department of Archology. UT has excavated a village site here that shows people living along these rich bottomlands as long as 9,000 years ago.

Around 900 B.C., near the height of the Egyptian Empire, the fields on Still Hollow Farm were home to Native American families of the Swannanoa phase. These people built houses, raised families, and planted fields of their own. Through succeeding generations, the land was used to support the inhabitants of the Nolichuckey Valley. For around 2,900 years the land of Still Hollow Farm has been continuously used for farming as these fields sustained hundreds of generations of folks living in the shadow of the Appalachian Mountains.

The granary which houses the Farmer's Wife still has signatures and grain calculations scribbled on the doors and inside walls.

The farm has a direct access to the Nolichucky River with areas beside the water for parking to unload canoes or kayaks.

The Birdwells are continuing to develop the land, so things will be changing .

There are convenient picnic areas along the river bank and creek. Visitors are encouraged to relax with by the water's edge or explore some of the hiking trails that the Birdwells are developing.

An annual September harvest and festival takes place on the farm.

Information and photographs for this geocache were copied from the farm’s Web site: stillhollowfarm.com or supplied by Mrs. Birdwell.

You are looking for a camo painted coffee can filled with goodies. There is an appropriate "first to find" prize.

Feb. 17, 2011, spoke with Ann, the owner, and cache is still in place. There is construction, but she said it is ok just to say "Hi" to the crew if they're working and go on and get the cache.
