As my geo name is Seneca Rocks, I only thought it appropriate to place a cache near my namesake.
Seneca Rocks is one of the most spectacular sandstone formations in the eastern US and is the site of this cache. Park in the parking lot and cross the footbridge over the river and start walking up that trail. The trail is 1.5 miles (one way) and gains 1000 feet in elevation. Take plenty of water in warmer weather.
As you ascend the trail from the observation deck, you will have to head left (northeast) away from the rocks and take the logging road that goes UP the ridge. When you near the coordinates, the cache is on the upper right side of the road behind a large rock. It is approximately six feet above the road, and from the road.
The original cache was destroyed in a forest fire in early 2002. This replacement cache has been placed close to where the original one was located. The cache is a green ammo box. In early 2023, another forest fire swept the ridge. The ammo can survived, but the contents were incinerated. A new log book is now in place. Have a great time in this wonderful spot. If you aren't too afraid of heights, you can go up a trail from the observation deck that goes out on the north summit of the rocks. Take your camera, the views are worth the hike.
