Geocache Description:

This is a great hike on an old part of the Space Walk Trail established by the Boy Scouts years ago. About one mile hike up to the cache site with about 300ft of elevation gain.

Best approach is from Four-Mile Post Extension and park at the parking area in Belvins Gap (N 34° 39.460' W 86° 31.035'). The trailhead is at the east end of the parking area (N 34° 39.409' W 86° 30.982') and is very nice old single track. Mountain bikes, ATV?s, and hikers use this north end of the Green Mountain area. Take your time and enjoy the canopy, large scattered limestone rock formations, numerous wildflowers and ferns. The climb is 330 feet elevation gain but is very gradual and doable for all.

Near the top of the ridge, watch for beautiful views to the east over the Hampton Cove area and look for a trail to the west (N 34° 39.168' W 86° 31.058'). This trail goes to the southeast Huntsville neighborhoods south of Grissom HS and is also a good hike.

To reach the Cache, follow these steps:

  • Go to Large Stump at original Cache Site (N 34° 39.123' W 86° 31.098')
  • Go 530ft on a heading of 203deg to Medium Stump
  • Check Stump Coordinates for final approach to Cache
  • Heading to Cache: Take your west coordinate; multiply the fraction by 2000
  • Feet to Cache: Take your north coordinate; multiple fraction by 1000; add heading
  • Please leave Cache completely hidden from view after visit

    Take care to leave the cache area the way you find it and watch for snakes in this area. I imagine this is a good sunning spot in the afternoons in the spring and fall. Take note of the views to the west over south Huntsville. I recommend extending your hike another mile along the Space Walk Trail to the radio towers. There is a power line (N 34° 38.492' W 86° 30.795') before you reach the towers that offer great-unobstructed views in both east and west directions.
