Holman’s Island (uninhabited), approximately 800m by 400m, lies1.5 km off the coast in Bedeque Bay, near Summerside, PEI.
First identified as Ile de Bedec (de la Roque 1752) and Indian Island (Holland 1765), the later ownership is traceable through a succession of family place names: Flynn’s, for an eccentric hermit who once lived there; Pope’s, after the Honourable J.C. Pope, merchant and shipbuilder; and finally, Holman’s for James Ludlow Holman (1827-1877), a prominent Summerside merchant. Holman, literally a man ahead of his time, had an interest in promoting the tourist industry. In the early 1870s he erected the magnificent Island Park Hotel on Holman’s Island (Figure 1). Built in 1872 at a cost of $80,000, the 125-room hotel had a dining room, recreation and billiards room, bath houses, bowling alleys, croquet grounds, and a carriage road encircling the shore. Unfortunately, the shortness of the season, a mosquito infestation, combined with Holman’s sudden death in 1877, rendered the resort a failure. It closed in 1877 and burned down in December 1904.
The island can be reached by an easy paddle during the summer months, but the relative lack of trails, overgrowth, thorns and mosquitoes quickly renders the landscape into an episode of “Survivor” and "Exile Island". It can also be reached during the winter by walking across the ice (3 km roundtrip) or snowmobiling, with the safest and recommended departure point near MacCallum’s Point past Lower Bedeque (Reference Point #1). Mosquito repellant and appropriate clothing are required during the spring and summer, and snowshoes are required during the winter. There are no facilities on the island, so food, water, a first aid kit and a cell-phone are recommended.
