Cammo'd bison tube in the woods. (My head's hurting already!)
Brandywine Airport was founded in 1939, as West Chester Airport. It had a grass runway until the 1980's. It's "identifier" is N99 (as in "November" 99). There was nothing around for miles except farms and woods in 1939.
Back in the mid-1980's, I was single and making pretty good money, so I decided to learn to fly. I learned to fly at G.O.Carlson Airport, just west of Coatesville. I learned in Cessna 150's, 152's and 172's, got my license, and graduated to Piper Archers, Arrows and Cherokees. I got my instrument rating in a Piper Cherokee (N13RG), then got my multi engine rating in a Piper Aztec and Grumman Couger.
Cessna likes numbers, Piper likes Native Americans, Grumman likes cats. Go figure...
Oddly enough, I've never taken off or landed at Brandywine Airport.
Precision instrument approaches use a Localizer and Glideslope, radio guidance coming from a transmitter right next to the runway that can lead you virtually right down to the runway. The Localizer lines you up on the runway centerline, while the Glideslope guides you down from your Final Approach Fix altitude to a couple hundred feet above the runway (the MDA). Deviations from the Localizer or Glideslope guidance are called "Off the Localizer" or "Off the Glideslope".
Non-precision instrument approaches use radio navigation sites that are distant from the airport and not nearly as accurate. They require a lot of skill, practice, confidence and discipline to fly competently.
N99 has a couple of non-precision instrument approaches. If you descend below the published MDA (minimum descent altitude) on an instrument approach, it's referred to as "Busting Minimums". It can be risky, and it's usually caused be a condition called "Get-home-itis".
Charlie taught me to fly, this one's for him.
Nowadays, I fly my Cub Cadet around the yard when the grass needs cutting...
Log only, BYOP, small FTF prize.
Congrats to Mr. Picnic for another amazing FTF!!
