Geocache Description:

This cache is near the area which is home to many of the Medfords.

The cache is located on a well maintained, graveled county road. The container is large enough to contain a micro-sized logsheet, so bring your own pen. The cache is located only a short distance from the roadway, parking is limited.

Please close the container securely and re-hide it as well as you found it.

Two young brothers of Irish descent arrived in Red River County, Texas with their parents and siblings during the 1870s. The Medford family settled in the area of the Lydia community.

Brothers P. J. (Parker Josiah) and B. W. (Benjamin Wheeler) Medford went into the mercantile business in Lydia in 1900. They had bought a lot and evidently built a new store or expanded in 1907. The lot cost them $250.00. P. J. left the Lydia business in 1908.

P. J. and his son Brose opened up a general mercantile business in Avery in 1909. Their early slogan was "Everything from the Cradle to the Grave". John Medford bought in to the store about 1910 and soon after P. J. left the business. The store was now Medford Brother's instead of P.J. Medford and Son. Medford's store was destroyed by fire in 1926 and was rebuilt back on the same spot, and was later bricked. Later still, Brose sold all his part to his brother John and it became John Medford's. The building remains today and was operated by members of the Medford family as a general mercantile, with "Everything from the Cradle to the Grave", until 1998.

B. W. Medford sold the Lydia store in 1912 and the rest of his land there in 1913, moved his family and bought land for a store in Avery in 1912. B.W. Medford Store opened for business in 1915 on South Burden St. and was still operating in 1920.
