On top of a small mountain in the Gunstock Ski Area - accessible by hiking or snowshoeing. Some short steep pitches along trail. Park at the Cross country center. Not sure what happens in the winter if you want to snowshoe during business hours....they may try to tag you for a fee. If you don't want that get there before 9am.
For you history buffs....there once was a rope tow on this mountain! Following is a brief story from the history of skiing in NH that pertains to ones that are no longer there.
LOST SKI AREAS OF THE BELKNAP MTN, NH REGION
Similar historical data and topo maps (thanks Paul) for Belknap. This region is just as confusing. Once again we have the names of five ski areas: GUNSTOCK, BELKNAP, ALPINE, MT ROWE, and COBBLE MOUNTAIN. Picture a letter "D" with the flat part along Hiway 11A (running roughly east and west) and the loop hanging to the south. At the bottom is the current GUNSTOCK ski area. Until 1958 that area was known as "BELKNAP", a very old area which opened in 1937. [Note: BELKNAP took its name from the region (Belknap Mtns). Both Belknap and Gunstock ski areas are on Gunstock Mtn, not Belknap Mtn.]
At the West end of the "D" is "Mt Rowe". There was a ski area there known as MT ROWE. In 1977 the area changed it's name to ALPINE RIDGE (and was operated by GUNSTOCK for a while). The area closed in 1984. The 1987 topo map still shows lifts on Mt. Rowe.
In a 1940 book with an illustration, there is still another ski area shown, located at the East end of the "D". It was called COBBLE MOUNTAIN: "open slope with rope tow". The 1987 topo map shows neither a lift nor open slope altho there is a 400 ft hill in that vicinity.
Now that we have that info...let's talk about the cache! I will admit that my gps isn't the greatest and the day I placed the cache, it was crappy weather (crappy because it was totally cloudy and none of that wonderful snow storm came this far north...bummer!) So, anyway, I'm not sure how good the coords are - so if the FTF has a good GPS, check it out please and let me know! Once you get to the top of Cobble (the trail on the Cross country center's maps is very close) you should find the foundation for the old top station for the tow which is in the photos posted. The cache is in a nearby location for which I will not post any hints as yet. It is pretty typical and will be accessible till we get buried with snow.
FTF surprise is tucked in with the cache....look for it and Happy Holidays!
