Geocache Description:

The Waronui Coal Mines & Railway was situated on the Toko Mouth Road, about 10 kms from Milton.
The coal was taken from Waronui by means of a branch railway from Milton.
The mine commenced operating in 1904.
On 18th September 1930 a tragedy occurred when 2 miners were overcome by methane gas. Both Joseph Morris & James Carruthers lives were lost.
The mine closed shortly thereafter.
The memorial was placed so the history of the mines should not be lost to future generations.
A short history of the mine and reference to the tragedy is contained in a book “ History of Kaitangata”.

The cache at the Plaque. It is a tin with a few swaps.
