Penha de Águia
„Why do you want to climb up this rock?“ – “Because it’s there!” Women can ask sometimes . . . . .
Probably the most of you already visited the Lusitani-Cache in Porto da Cruz. And surely you took some pictures of this impressive rock and I presume some of you asked yourselves if it’s possible to climb up there. Yes it is!
The story of this rock is already described in the Lusitani-Cache text (GC1DNAK). The only additionally things you have to know are: it’s steep, it’s slippery and it’s dangerous. So forget it when it rains. And it’s more a 4 hours than a 3 hours hike. We parked our car at the football stadium (N32º 46.148 W016º 50.805) in Cruz/Terra do Batista (see gallery). At the end of your hike in the village Penha de Águia there’s a bar where you can refresh yourself. When he’s in a good mood, the owner will take you back to your car at the football stadium for a fair tip. Bus lines from Machico to Porto da Cruz and Santana are also available.
Don’t forget to take something to drink and to eat with you. Mountain boots are obligatory! Don’t forget your windbreaker.
