Geocache Description:

The Gateway Bridge

The Gateway Bridge is a very beautiful example of a modified through-arch bridge. It spans the Middle Fork Snoqualmie River and was built in 1993 to provide access from the Middle Fork Trailhead
to the many trails located on the east side of the river.

Through-arch bridges are a refined type of arch bridge. Arched bridges have been built for thousands of years and some of the oldest are still in use today; for example the Arkadiko Bridge was built during the Bronze Age around 1200 BC and is still used 3,200 years later.

The structure of arch bridges is very straight forward. External vertical forces placed on the arch shape are supported internally by compression. At the end of the arch the compression force is resolved to both vertical and horizontal forces. The horizontal force can be quite large and is resisted by very large unmoving anchorages, either man-made or natural such as canyon walls.

For through-arch bridges the supported deck runs through the arch rather then over the top as it does with arched bridges. The deck is connected to the arch above by hanging cables or rods. Other then this simple difference, the structure remains the same.

Some notable examples of through-arch bridges include:
Lupu Bridge
Sydney Harbour Bridge
Bayonne Bridge
Hell Gate Bridge
