This is a replacement cache for Convict Tunnel or Not? by Team Hylton. Many thanks to Team Hylton for siting the original cache.
This cache is on the old highway from Grafton to Glen Innes. The road starts off asphalt and becomes dirt after about 15kms. The rest of the trip is on a dirt road. This is a beautiful drive with many picnic areas, camping spots and photo opportunities along the river.
This new cache is a film canister log only cache at an important site for Australia. You will have to park about 200 meters away.
A brief history of the tunnel (taken from Team Hylton's original notes).
A little Googling and you will find information that makes you believe this is an actual convict tunnel. If your interested in finding the real truth you need to go for a drive to "Dalmorton" a town that was, (that's not too far from the Tunnel and read the info up there or ask the locals.) and you will find out. The tunnel was actually dug out by .... Poorly paid workers ... or as we are lead to belive . Convicts. here is what we got off one website.
The Convict Carved Tunnel is situated approximately 120km east of Glen Innes down the famous Old Grafton Road (or about 40kms west of Grafton). The tunnel is the only one of its kind in Australia, it was hewn out of rock by convicts in the last century. A scenic drive is well worth the visit and there are many areas for picnics and camping. The road follows the beautiful Boyd River for about 35km along a dirt road. Caravans can be taken along this road. Easy viewing for disabled people (no toilet facilities available).
Interesting things to look for
Check out the dates in the cave roof of the people that worked on the tunnel. 1880's datings abound.
