Geocache Description:

Only with a 4x4car and the whole route from Hentis Bay to Hentis Bay takes a day.

The Messum Crater, one of the volcanoes of the Etendeka period, lies south west of the Brandberg. Geological surveys have revealed that many of the volcanic rocks found in Brazil are identical to those found in the Messum Crater, thus supporting the theory of continental drift. The Messum area is home to many interesting plant species, such as the living fossil plant, Welwitschia mirabilis, which is endemic to the Namib Desert.

Along this route you will find  the richest lichen stretches in the Namib Desert. Lichens are the results of a symbiotic relationship between algae and fungi. Lichens are able to use moisture from humid air as well al from frog. Lichens are extremely slow growing – no regeneration may be noted in 40-years. Destructions of the lichens leaves a very long-lasting scar. Please do take care not to leave the existing roads!
