Geocache Description:

One of a series of six related historic caches.

Jesse Knight was a cattle rancher and Methodist preacher in the Manatee and Sarasota County areas in the mid to late 1800s. Although his primary occupation was cattle ranching he also spent a great deal of time riding a circuit through Manatee and Sarasota Counties preaching at several designated locations. One of these locations was the Venice-Nokomis United Methodist Church.

Venice-Nokomis United Methodist Church was established in 1868 by Jesse Knight, one of the first settlers in this territory. His first homestead was near Tampa but during the war he moved south to the Upper Myakka Lake area. The cattle did exceptional well in Myakka but Jesse didn’t want to live inland - he preferred the coast.

Jesse held services in his home until the attendance required a larger area. So, an open sided arbor with a palm frond roof was built for services. About five years later a combination school and church was built. In 1903 another larger church was built and was the primary place of worship until the hurricane of 1926 which completely destroyed the church. The church which is at this location was built to replace the one destroyed in 1926 and contains the original bell from the first church as well as two of the original stained glass windows.

Two other churches were started by Jessie or his children but are not a part of this cache series. If you would like to visit them they are at N 27° 20.127 W 082° 32.495 (First United Methodist Sarasota - one of the founding members was one of his sons) and N 26° 57.575 W 082° 04.267 (Trinity United Methodist - Port Charlotte. Jesse and Joel Knight built a dock to ship cattle here. It quickly became a settlement and this church was established to serve the community there.)

The other caches in this series are:
GC227K3 - Jesse Knight – Pine Level
GC227K0 - Jesse Knight – Owen Creek
GC227KD - Jesse Knight – Nokomis Cemetery
GC227KA - Jesse Knight – Grace United Methodist
