Geocache Description:

One of a series of six related historic caches

Jesse Knight was a cattle rancher and Methodist preacher in the Manatee and Sarasota County areas in the mid to late 1800s. Although his primary occupation was cattle ranching he also spent a great deal of time riding a circuit through Manatee and Sarasota Counties preaching at several designated locations. When the area of Venice began to grow quickly the Venice-Nokomis United Methodist church (begun by Jesse Knight) in nearby Nokomis felt the need to establish a mission there. In May of 1960 mission services were started in the Venice Little theater (then located at the airport). As the church grew the services were moved to the Elks hall in October of the same year. Finally on May 21, 1961 the mission was chartered as a separate church named Grace Methodist Church with 180 members. As it continued to grow they soon became large enough to purchase land and build a dedicated church building. The ground breaking ceremony for the new church facility was held on July 15, 1962. The church has continued to expand and now hosts a large campus with multiple buildings and services for the community. The name was eventually changed to Grace on the Island. The other caches in this series are: GC227K3 - Jesse Knight – Pine Level GC227K0 - Jesse Knight – Owen Creek GC227KD - Jesse Knight – Nokomis Cemetery GC227K5 - Jesse Knight - Venice-Nokomis UMC GCXAY2 - Miakka Memorial
