Geocache Description:

Lost Erie Beach Geocache

One day while taking the geohound for a walk, we came upon this sandy area and it made me wonder what this area was like thousands of years ago and if this was the remnants of an ancient beach. Archaeologists believe that this area was first inhabited by the Clovis people who arrived about 12,000 years ago just in time to witness the birth of Niagara Falls! These people eventually formed into the Erie Tribe (or Erieehronon) and lived in this area until they were scattered or absorbed by the Iroquois Confederation. Although in reality these people had good times and bad times like everyone else, it's fun to imagine an idyllic fishing village on a beautiful beach with big waves rolling in. If you walk down here on a windy day you can still see the big waves crashing over the breakwall. The purpose for this cache is to enjoy a walk on the Greenway Nature Trail and to think about the history of this place while doing so. Of course, all items placed in the cache are appreciated, but items relevant to the history of this place are especially welcome; anything from Erie Indian history to the Erie Canal. This is a three stage multi-cache, all stages are near the paved trail and a bike would make quick work of them. It's about a 2 mile round trip to get all three stages so dress appropriately (it's generally a little colder and windier down by the lakeshore). I've determined that completing the three stages of this geocache is worth six Weight Watchers activity points. NOTICE: Google maps shows the location of the cache to be in the water. This is incorrect. There is no need to go near the water to find any of the stages of this cache. NOTICE: During Outer Harbor concerts, stage 2 of the cache may not be accessible.
