Slightly smaller than a film canister, but before you cry "Another micro in the woods!?" and get all angry with me, I'm no fan of them either so just look in one of the two large holes in the big oak tree under the fungus. UPDATE 9/18/10 - fungus is all gone! We'll never know...
Long ago Species5618 gave me permission to add to his Species series whenever it seemed fit, and after spotting this cool shelf fungus this morning I thought I'd hide one near it and introduce people to this cool species. Well, there are thousands of fungi species, and I had no luck narrowing this particular example beyond it possibly being in the fomes, fomitopsis, or ganoderm genus. In fact, the only thing I'm sure of is that it is in the fungi kingdom
. Anyone who can help me narrow it down a bit, please do!
In every species of shelf fungi, unfortunately for the tree, once the fungus starts, it can't be stopped and it will kill the tree - which seems to be happening in this case. These invasive, but cool looking fungi can live for years while the host tree slowly dies.
You'll likely have to find a way up to stand next to the tree, unless you have a lot of height.
