Geocache Description:

The 107 mile- long Genesee Valley Canal ran from the Erie Canal at Rochester, New York to The Allegheny River at Olean, New York. From there, it was possible to move goods 270 miles down river to the junction of the Monongahela River at Pittsburg. Funding for the construction of the canal was authorized in 1836, and the final terminus of the canal at Millgrove Pond was finally reached in 1861. The section of the canal between Rockville Lake and Olean, where this lock is located, was completed in 1856. The Genesee Valley Canal boasted 106 locks, most of which are located the north of Cuba where the canal ascended a long, steep ridge before dropping down the other side to the level of the Allegheny River. Lock 102 is close to the terminus of the canal. By the time the canal was completed in 1861, railroads were coming to prominence. In 1878 the canal was decommissioned and a railroad was built over most of the old tow path thus ending the era of the Genesee Valley Canal.
