Moved to a slightly better location to enjoy the view of the Clay holes better.
This series is in honour of the industry which brought life to the town of Corby. There aren’t many Caches around or in Corby and so I have decided to place a series, keep an eye out for more of the series in the future.
Corby’s Steel works brought people from far and wide to work here, my own parents were from Durham and Scotland arriving as children when my Grandparents moved here for work.
This is the sixth of the series – The Black Hills and Clay Holes. This area is now known as St James Industrial Estate. The Black Hills were also called the 'Soot Hills' and were formed by the 'slag' waste from the Steel works, many a child used to play there. The Clay Holes were originally part of the James Pain Brickworks but once they became filled with water they were used for swimming and diving by the local youths and even some steel workers on their way home from work, even though it was very dangerous. It is said that several people have died here, although this was in the 60's!
The cache is located on the footpath from Corby to Little Oakley and Newton which has access from St. James Industrial Estate or alternatively from the Euro Hub Road near Little Stanion. The area is used by mountain bikers as a track.
It is recommended that you access this via the Euro Hub area as this is paved, lit and would be suitable for wheelchair users, help may be needed though to actually retrieve the cache. Please do not swim in the clay holes it is very deep and dangerous! Take care of children and dogs.
If using the St James parking then please be aware that there is a brook at the start of the track and you will have to cross train tracks to get to the cache. They are still in use for local businesses but, not very often. Please take care and keep children and dogs close and under control. It is also recommended that you where wellies and take care in winter and following wet weather as the track can be very muddy and water logged.
There are no Car parks but there should be safe parking nearby on the local roads. Waypoints for both Parking areas are provided.
Good luck and happy caching.
